Do You Need a Rental Car in Colorado Springs? A Local Transportation Guide

Renting a car can make a Colorado Springs visit more flexible, but a smooth pickup begins before you arrive at the counter. Knowing what to bring, how payment and deposits work, and what to review during the vehicle inspection can prevent delays and unexpected charges.

1. Choose a Vehicle for Your Actual Itinerary

Start with the number of passengers, the amount of luggage, and the places you plan to visit. An economy or compact car can be a practical choice for one or two travelers who expect to stay mainly in the city. A midsize or full-size car can provide more passenger and trunk space. An SUV may be useful when you need additional cargo room, while an 8- or 15-passenger van may be a better fit for a larger group.

Do not choose a vehicle based only on the advertised passenger count. Make sure the available cargo space will hold suitcases, strollers, mobility equipment, sports gear, or other items without blocking the driver’s view. Vehicle models and features vary, so confirm important needs before pickup rather than assuming a particular drivetrain, navigation system, or convenience feature is included.

2. Bring the Required License, Identification, and Payment Card

Every renter and additional driver must present an acceptable physical driver’s license, meet the applicable age requirements, and be approved and listed on the Rental Agreement before driving the vehicle.

• The minimum age is currently 21 for standard rental vehicles.
• The minimum age is currently 25 for 8- through 15-passenger vans.
• The physical payment card must be presented at pickup.
• The cardholder must be present with valid government-issued photo identification.
• The payment-card name must match the renter or an approved authorized driver.
• International renters should contact the office in advance because a passport or additional documentation may be required.

Bringing screenshots or photocopies instead of the required original documents may delay or prevent the rental. If another adult may drive during the trip, arrange for that person to be approved before the vehicle is released.

3. Understand Pay-at-Pickup and the Security Deposit

Handy Car Rental’s online reservations are completed on a pay-at-pickup basis. No rental payment or security deposit is collected through the website. Before the vehicle is released, the renter must pay the required charges, provide the applicable deposit, complete verification, and sign the Rental Agreement.

The current standard security deposit is $200 when paying by credit card and $500 when paying by debit card. The deposit is separate from the rental charge. Cash and cash cards are not accepted, and all cards remain subject to verification and approval.

An online reservation request does not by itself guarantee that a rental is complete. Vehicle availability, renter eligibility, identity verification, payment approval, and the signed Rental Agreement must all be confirmed.

4. Review Mileage and Fuel Before You Leave

Unless the Rental Agreement states a different allowance, a rental currently includes 200 miles for each rental day. Additional mileage is charged at $0.40 per excess mile. Check the outgoing odometer reading and the included mileage shown on your documents before driving away.

The fuel policy is based on the level recorded during the outgoing inspection. Return the vehicle with at least that same fuel level. A vehicle returned below the required level may be charged $4.00 per gallon for the estimated shortage. You do not need to fill the tank completely unless it was recorded as full at pickup.

5. Participate in the Outgoing Inspection

The outgoing inspection protects both the renter and the rental company by documenting the vehicle’s condition at pickup. Review the recorded odometer, fuel level, exterior, interior, existing damage, and photographs before accepting the vehicle.

If you notice a scratch, dent, stain, warning light, missing item, unusual sound, or other concern that is not shown on the inspection, report it immediately. Before leaving the lot, take a moment to locate the lights, windshield-wiper controls, fuel-door release, parking brake, and other controls you may need.

6. Arrange Airport Transportation in Advance

Complimentary pickup and drop-off service to and from Colorado Springs Airport may be available by prior arrangement and during applicable service hours. Airport transportation depends on advance notice, driver and vehicle availability, weather, traffic, and passenger and luggage capacity.

If you need airport service, add it to your reservation and confirm the instructions before traveling. After arrival, collect your luggage, proceed to the designated ground-transportation or shuttle area, and contact Handy Car Rental as directed.

7. Check Travel Boundaries and Road Conditions

A Colorado Springs itinerary may include steep grades, fast-changing weather, and higher elevations. Check the forecast and COtrip road conditions before a mountain drive. Slow down for conditions, allow extra following distance, and do not assume that all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive eliminates traction risks.

The rental vehicle must remain within Colorado unless Handy Car Rental gives prior written approval for out-of-state travel. The vehicle also may not be used on unpaved, off-road, or unsafe roads unless expressly approved. Discuss your route with the office before pickup if your plans include another state or an uncertain road.

8. Confirm Your Protection and Insurance Plan

Review any optional protection products offered for the rental and their written terms. If you plan to rely on personal automobile insurance or credit-card rental benefits, contact the insurer or card issuer directly to confirm what is covered, who is covered, applicable deductibles, vehicle restrictions, and any exclusions. Handy Car Rental cannot determine whether a personal policy or card benefit applies to a particular loss.

9. Request Extensions Before the Scheduled Return Time

A rental extension is not automatic. Contact Handy Car Rental before the scheduled return time, obtain approval, pay all required extension charges, and receive written or electronically recorded confirmation of the new return date and time. Leaving a message or continuing to keep the vehicle does not create an approved extension.

Return the vehicle at the agreed location and time with the required fuel level, all keys and equipment, and no personal belongings left inside. An incoming inspection will record the return odometer, fuel level, and vehicle condition.
